A Barrel of Eels
Summary
Pauline tells a story of Ben Stokes the carrier.
Transcript
He started off with horses, which he kept here and then he moved on to a lorry and as Ben (Pauline’s husband) got older so he went and helped him on the lorry, in the school holidays. His grandfather always tells the tale as he was coming home from Bristol one day with a barrel full of eels and he also took passengers and they escaped in the cart, a nightmare I think. People used to put a card outside their gate, “carrier please call” and he would call on his way to Bristol and either take things or bring things home -that’s how he worked. There was another carrier as well, a Mr. Coles but they didn’t get on very well.
