Tying St. Peter's Church Gates
Summary
Pauline Simper and Pauline Cooper describe how the choirboys would not let the bride and groom out until they had been given pennies.
Transcript
Pauline Simper They had a tradition that they tied the gates and the bridegroom had to lift the bride over the gates before the choirboys would open it for them. They tied the gates and you had to throw them some money before the little monkeys would open the gates. It was alright as long as the bride was smaller than the bridegroom Pauline Cooper They’ve got a latch gate and they used to put the latch across and give them pennies and I have a picture still of me and Geoff lifting me up at that gate that was the tradition.
