Going up the chimney
Summary
Mary Dyer, born 1937, describes going to the top of Portishead "B" chimney.
Transcript
One morning we were working and the superintendent said “Quick, we’ve got a chance to go up the chimney” so about four of us, no hard hats, no health and safety and we went in this lift, which was made of scaffolding, a rough old lift, which they actually used for the workmen who were building it. They were building the chimney up until they got to the top. We went up in this lift, got out and looked all around Portishead. What a view but we didn’t have a camera with us. I’ve never seen a photograph taken from the top of it, but we were actually standing round the rim of this chimney, huge thing and that was the first chimney of Portishead “B” station. You did it, you just went in this lift – gosh!
