We had a lot of interest going on here of course when we started building, he was working, I was working. We were up here most evenings in the summer and weekends. It was cold when you were putting window frames in. I dug, I did everything, painting, mixing up cement, I didn’t do bricklaying. He did it on a plain design, a plain roof and worked round in a square. He had never done bricklaying before, but he had seen things done and he did all the plumbing and electrical stuff. We had a plasterer who was his uncle, which was handy because his uncle still lived in Portishead, A carpenter helped him do the roof, John Colburn and the other carpenter was hanging the doors. With Jim helping he built all the kitchen cupboards and everything. It took us two years solidly; we didn’t do anything else for two years. We never went anywhere really.
