Cows in the meadow and a long walk
Summary
Jane remembers the cows crossing the High Street and a long walk across fields to West Hill
Transcript
When you come down to what I would call the beginning of Brampton way proper because I still see that top end as Albert Road, there was a big 5-bar gate and a lane that went down the straight bit of Brampton, opposite the garage, which led to farmland and I can remember as a child, cows, regularly walking from Gale’s farm, the other side of the High Street, back and forth for milking and stepping over the cowpats as you went to school in the morning. I clearly remember going to a hairdresser up on West Hill and we used to walk up Coombe Road, there was obviously no Avon Way, and we went over fields, and I can remember part way up there was a stile, which you then climber over to get up to the top and on to West Hill. I think the hairdressers was somewhere off to the right-hand side, near to where to old St. Joseph’s was. Ironically there, with a connection to the future. The hairdresser was obviously someone who my mum knew and that was why we went all that way there to find one because I am sure there was one there in the High Street, but when my own children went to play group the lady who was the hairdresser was one of the workers there, it was the Dock Club play group in those days
