Transcript
We also had three or four farms dotted around the outside of the village and Herbert Gale, which we new as Gales farm, now Court Farm used to drive his cows from the farm down to the fields at the back of Albert Road, which is now Brampton Way and I was terrified of these great beasts, if I was riding my bike to work when they came down I used to dash into somebody’s garden and shut the gate, I was so frightened of them – still am if it comes to that. Can you imagine these cows going along the High street now, what chaos that would cause? He also used to take his tractor, towing the trailer, on the same route down to the fields and fill it up with hay. All the local lads would be helping him chuck this hay on top and then they would all climb up on the top, including my husband, he was one of them and go back to the farm. They were just perched on this loose hay, I mean Health & Safety would have a fit, it wouldn’t be allowed they would spoil all the fun, I don’t think anyone ever got injured. They would then get back to the farm and have apples or whatever else would be going and that was great fun – so they say. I don’t know I wouldn’t go up there!
